Understanding Your IV Fluid Options
Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride)
Normal Saline is a sterile IV fluid containing water and sodium chloride. It is commonly used to support hydration and increase circulating fluid volume. It is one of the most frequently administered intravenous fluids in healthcare and is appropriate for many hydration needs.
Lactated Ringer's Solution
Lactated Ringer's contains water along with several electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride, plus sodium lactate. The lactate is naturally converted by the liver into bicarbonate, which helps maintain the body's normal acid-base balance. Despite its name, Lactated Ringer's does not contain milk or lactose.
What Is the Difference?
Both Normal Saline and Lactated Ringer's are intravenous crystalloid fluids used to support hydration and restore fluid balance. The primary difference is their electrolyte composition.

Normal Saline contains sodium and chloride only.

Lactated Ringer's contains multiple electrolytes, making its composition more similar to the body's natural extracellular fluid.
